Who We Are

Beyond Borders Publishing is a boutique publishing house dedicated to books that explore the multicultural experience. We are committed to amplifying and honoring stories that explore the identities, transitions, relationships, and belonging(s) that so often go unrecorded from the culturally-fluid (TCKs, CCKs, Adult TCKs, TCAs, expats, repats, and all those who find themselves ‘in-between’).

Founded by writer, Third Culture Kid consultant, and intercultural trainer Megan C. Norton-Newbanks, Beyond Borders Publishing grows from her extensive experience working at the intersection of identity, culture, belonging, and global mobility. Megan brings expertise as a writer, consultant, educator, and advocate for the TCK community. Learn more about Megan’s work.

Our collections are built collaboratively, with deep gratitude for the contributors who entrust their words, experiences, and art to us. We believe these stories matter, not only as reflections of individual lives, but as a way of preserving the rich, complex, and often unseen experiences of growing up and living between cultures.

A few of the pieces our contributors entrusted to us, in their own words. This is the kind of work we would love to receive for Volume 2.

Spiral of Identity by Anastasia Lijadi
Spiral of Identity
Anastasia Lijadi
Acrylic on canvas
Places lived: Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taipei, Macau, Austria

Layers of identity refer to the various dimensions that make up a person's sense of self. These layers are complex, interwoven, and influenced by a variety of social, personal, and cultural factors. Identity is fluid and can shift over time based on experiences, environments, and personal growth.

Neverland by Erica Jones
Neverland
Erica Jones
Watercolor on paper
Places lived: Thailand, USA

Astronauts in my art are often pictures of myself, between worlds, experiencing what few others have, and forever changed by that. This painting is about looking back and realizing that the past is only a memory, something that can only be seen through a window, never reached. And yet, there is something beautiful about having something worth missing.

Study in Red by Eliora Secchia
Study in Red
Eliora Secchia
Oil on canvas
Places lived: UK, Ethiopia, Finland

Painted in the midst of transition, this piece serves as a reminder that it is okay to cry. Tears mean you are healing. Pain and grief do not last forever, and a season of sadness will lead to deeper joy and brighter days.

Homage to Home by Eve Raggett
Homage to Home
Eve Raggett
Crochet with mohair, wire and wooden skewers
Places lived: Singapore, Spain, Germany, India

This piece was inspired by my cultural identity and how many smaller elements make up a larger picture. I chose crochet, a series of intertwined loops, to portray the complexity that comes with discovering identity. The different national flowers were chosen to represent different cultures and traditions, working together to create something new, a bouquet of my being.

Reflection by Tal Rocha
Reflection
Tal Rocha
Xylography
Places lived: Senegal, Itajubá and Belo Horizonte, Brazil

"Reflection" represents the two sides of my being, the first one being Senegalese and the second one being Brazilian. Both are a reflection of each other.

Mixed-Up World by Josiah Hernandez
Mixed-Up World
Josiah Hernandez
Paper collage
Places lived: Indonesia, USA, Mexico

This art piece shows how my world is mixed-up and broken which makes one complete world, and that world is my life.

Artwork © the individual artists, from A Work of Heart, Volume 1, compiled by Simona Wiig and Megan C. Norton-Newbanks.

Letters Now Sent is an archive of soul and story, vulnerability and voice. Through letters penned to loved ones, this book captures the raw beauty of growing up as a TCK, living in the liminal spaces between cultures, languages, and identities.
Mariam Navaid Ottimofiore · author of This Messy Mobile Life and The Guilty Can’t Say Goodbye
At Velvet Ashes, we hold space for stories that are honest and holy, even when they’re messy. That’s exactly what you’ll find in Letters Now Sent. These letters are honest, sometimes unpolished, and intentionally personal, offering readers a window into experiences that are often hidden or misunderstood. Whether you’ve lived across cultures or are just beginning to understand that kind of life, these letters will move you. They’re an invitation to listen deeply, to honor complexity, and to see others, and maybe yourself, with fresh compassion.
Denise Beck · Executive Director, Velvet Ashes
This remarkable collection weaves together letters that capture life stories, upbringings, reflections, and deeply personal insights. Through Megan’s thoughtful curation, these letters form a rich tapestry of experiences, offering rare glimpses into international families, TCK journeys, and so much more. I found myself rereading some of these stories, marking passages to share with my husband and daughter, and marveling at how perfectly so many writers expressed feelings I’ve struggled to articulate. Prepare to be moved, to laugh, to recognize your own experiences in these pages, and to feel compelled to pass this book along to anyone seeking understanding and connection in the TCK world.
Andrea Schmitt · Global Girl Coach
Working with Megan on this project has been really good. Not only has she done the emotional labor to discern a need within our cross-cultural community, but she has also come up with a unique way to bring people together around the topic of writing, sending, and sharing the letters that have been coming together in our hearts for a long time. Megan’s project is at once a stunning depiction of our unique experiences and a unifying understanding of our shared commonalities.
